Rudders help you turn your kayak as well as trim the heading of the boat in challenging conditions. This overstern design is spring-loaded forwards so if it comes in contact with an object from the front, it will kick-up out of harms way.
Where possible we always install a transom mount SmartTrack for maximum rigidity and rudder feel, with an appropriately sized blade. The SmartTrack can be raised using the cleat at the cockpit through 180 degrees when landing to prevent damage to the rudder blade or when clearing debris. Where possible all steering and uphaul lines are run internally to keep the deck clear of clutter.
All our sea kayaks come with rudders as standard. You can exchange your rudder for a skeg if you wish, but in most cases the rudder is the preferred option.
